Top searches of the year
Much as we may be fascinated by the political system, or argue that we prefer classical music to 'The X Factor', there's no escaping the view of our nation exposed by our top ten searches of the year. As recession brought job losses and extensive cuts to public services across the UK, the top searches give us a fascinating insight into how we Brits chose to deal with, and distract ourselves from, these difficult changes.
In this year's searches, reality shows and their stars fill only three of the available spots, as opposed to last year's five, perhaps reflecting a deepening seriousness and a new national obsession with the issue of money. For example, 2009's guilty pleasure, 'Big Brother', dropped down the rankings to reveal a much more mercenary distraction topping the list. 'The X Factor' has disappeared entirely, although one of its stars has sealed her place among the search engine superstars. Last year we mourned the passing of Michael Jackson and Jade Goody; 2010 has brought us wider, more worrying concerns.
